- Power Analysis
- Control Systems
- System Design
Mr. Smith currently is managing member and Systems Engineer for S3 Energy Group and provides consulting services to several companies and their client bases, in the areas of Power Quality & Analysis; Control and Automation Systems testing & evaluations; Thermal Imaging Studies for advanced equipment failure prevention and preventative maintenance scheduling; Sustainable Energy Solutions, methodologies, and recommendations.
In the area of PQA Mr. Smith can provide empirical data collection and analysis, energy usage monitoring, and general evaluations providing energy efficiency solutions or issue remediation recommendations. In the areas of Controls Systems, Automation and Remote diagnostics Mr. Smith, having helped design & develop robotic storage and retrieval systems in the past, can collaborate with clients to help define, develop, and implement new solutions to old problems. When it comes to electrical switchgear and equipment failure prevention, there are few better ways to capture problems before they happen then Thermal Imaging Studies. Thermal Imaging studies are used to reduce operational downtime, catastrophic equipment failure and associated costs, and in many cases to reduce insurance costs.
Mr. Smith has worked with and/or consulted to clients such as Genetech, Starwood, Cypress Contracting (a NASA contractor at the Ames research center), Genecor, Danisco – subsidiary of Dupont, Sta’bl Power, and Economizer N. America.

Over the previous 20 years, Mr. Smith was Project Lead for two business process automation products marketed to the Hotel industry. He managed the product definition, feature/function, architecture, and product design processes. He oversaw engineering development activities through to manufacturing processes to field-testing, product refinement, and initial general release. Project development elements included mechanical, electrical and software engineering disciplines. He also had fiscal responsibility for managing project budgets, and meeting targeted product cost goals.
Mr. Smith has manufacturing operations expertise including manufacturing planning, tooling requirements and selection, shop-floor activities, staffing and quality control. In addition, Mr. Smith has managed field and customer support operations and has been a general contractor on numerous residential, commercial remodeling and new construction projects in Oregon, California, and Arizona. Along with those responsibilities other skill sets were applied which included design, layout, metal fabrication, and installation of custom automatic gates; multiple types of access systems including diagnosis and repair of integrated access control and automated systems.
From mid 1990’s to 2001, serving as Co-Founder of Corsair Technology Inc. based in the San Francisco Bay Area
Mr. Smith was responsible for Product Development & Mfg Operations for a start-up company, which marketed and manufactured a robotics-based machine for institutional and retail applications. The machines offered automated garment control, management, and distribution system for hotels, hospitals, and in the future, dry-cleaners. Mr. Smith was responsible for propelling this product and the associated technologies from the beta form to a production model.
Specific product development responsibilities included: assessment of the existing software, mechanical & electrical designs, product upgrade and/or redesign development, management of material and component specification; vendor selection; engineering management (software, electrical and mechanical), product testing and performance enhancement, and procurement of all materials & components.
Specific management responsibilities included over-sight of manufacturing processes, training in use of all equipment and tools used in the manufacturing and installation of the product, project management and direct over-sight of customer installations & on-site customer training and technical support functions.
During 1994 to 1996, Mr. Smith was Project Manager for Inn Time Service LLC
A Start-up Company, based in San Carlos, CA, that was selling a revolutionary automated inventory control system to hotels. Inn Time Service (ITS) developed a unique monitoring and inventory control product targeted towards the hotel industry. The ITS product incorporated a revolutionary powerline-based communication technology that allowed hotel management to “speak “to each mini bar in the guest rooms from a central server without disturbing the guest.
Responsibilities included participating in product and application definition and development, on-site electrical distribution system surveys & analysis, site-specific system installation & design plan, customized computer assembly, direct management of customer installations including user training and support.
In the early 90’s as Project Manager & Senior Applications Technician for Paladin Technology, Inc. located in Burlingame, Ca, Mr. Smith helped to develop robotic equipment or “smart” vending machines for institutional and retail applications:
Responsibilities encompassed managing both electrical and mechanical design processes, acted as liaison between senior management and engineering teams from product specification & development to alpha product testing to final release and testing functions for all software and mechanical elements, which included extensive field monitoring for product performance enhancement. Additionally, Mr. Smith designed and built system’s power and control panels along with becoming the leading advocate of system support capability via remote means for system test & diagnostics, which is unique to this product, as a method of minimizing post-sale support costs. He implemented all on-site user-training programs in concert with technical training efforts.
Additionally, Mr. Smith from 1987 to 1991, acting as Facilities Supervisor & Lead Technician for ECS Composites, Inc. located in Southern Oregon:
